This page explains how to disconnect a social media account from Social Butterfly and how to have your Social Butterfly data deleted. You can do most of it yourself in a couple of minutes, or you can email us and we will handle it.
In a hurry? Email [email protected] with the subject line "Delete My Data," sent from the email address on your account. We will confirm within 10 business days and complete the deletion within 30 days.
1. Choose what you want to remove
| If you want to… | Do this |
|---|---|
| Stop Social Butterfly from touching one social account | Disconnect that platform (section 2), then revoke access on the platform itself (section 3). |
| Remove particular posts, drafts or images | Delete individual content (section 4). |
| Stop paying but keep your data for now | Cancel your subscription in Settings → Billing. Cancelling does not delete anything. |
| Erase everything and close your account | Delete your account (section 5) or email us (section 6). |
2. Disconnect a social media account
Disconnecting stops all future access. We immediately revoke and permanently delete the access token for that account, cancel any posts still scheduled to it, and stop collecting new analytics from it.
- Sign in to Social Butterfly.
- Go to Settings → Connected Accounts.
- Find the account you want to remove and select Disconnect.
- Confirm. You will be asked whether you also want to delete the historical analytics and imported posts we hold for that account — choose Delete data too if you want them gone.
Posts that were already published to the platform stay on the platform. Deleting them there is a separate step you take on the platform itself.
3. Also revoke access on the platform
Disconnecting in Social Butterfly is enough on our side. As a belt-and-braces step, you can also remove Social Butterfly from the platform's own list of connected apps. Look for these settings:
| Platform | Where to remove Social Butterfly |
|---|---|
| Settings & Privacy → Settings → Apps and Websites → select Social Butterfly → Remove | |
| Settings → Website Permissions / Apps and Websites → Active → Remove. Business accounts are usually managed through the linked Facebook Page. | |
| Threads | Settings → Account → Website Permissions → Apps and Websites |
| X (Twitter) | Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Apps and sessions → Connected apps → Revoke app permissions |
| Settings & Privacy → Data privacy → Other applications → Permitted services → Remove | |
| TikTok | Settings and privacy → Security & permissions → Manage app permissions → Remove |
| YouTube / Google | Google Account → Security → Your connections to third-party apps & services → select Social Butterfly → Remove access |
| Settings → Security and permissions / Apps → Revoke access | |
| Any other platform | Look for "connected apps," "third-party apps," "authorized applications" or "permissions" in that platform's settings. |
Platforms redesign their settings regularly, so the exact wording may differ. If you cannot find the option, email us and we will point you to the current location.
4. Delete individual content
- Drafts and scheduled posts: open the post in your calendar or content list and choose Delete. Deleting a scheduled post cancels it, as long as it has not already been sent to the platform.
- Media library items: Library → select the file → Delete.
- Butterfly AI history: Settings → Privacy & Data → Clear AI history.
- A team member's access: Settings → Team → select the person → Remove.
Deleted items go to a recycle bin for 30 days so you can recover a mistake, then are permanently erased. To skip the recycle bin, choose Delete permanently.
5. Delete your whole account
This cannot be undone. Export anything you want to keep first, using Settings → Privacy & Data → Export my data.
- Sign in as the account owner.
- Go to Settings → Privacy & Data.
- Select Delete my account and data.
- Type your email address to confirm, and confirm again from the verification email we send.
Your subscription is cancelled at the same time. Fees already paid are not refunded, as set out in our Terms of Service.
6. Ask us to delete it for you
If you cannot sign in, or you would rather we did it, email [email protected] with:
- Subject line: Delete My Data
- The email address on your Social Butterfly account
- Whether you want everything deleted, or only specific connected accounts or content (tell us which)
Send it from the account email if you can. If you cannot, we will ask you a few questions to verify your identity before we delete anything — this protects you from someone else deleting your work. An authorized agent may make a request on your behalf with written permission we can confirm with you.
You may also write to us at 300 Lenora Street, Ste. 391, Seattle, WA 98121.
7. What we delete, and when
| Data | What happens |
|---|---|
| Platform access tokens | Revoked and permanently deleted immediately. |
| Scheduled and draft posts | Cancelled and deleted immediately. |
| Uploaded images and video | Deleted within 30 days. |
| Profile, workspace and team data | Deleted within 30 days. |
| Imported analytics and engagement data | Deleted within 30 days. |
| Butterfly AI prompts and history | Deleted within 30 days. |
| Encrypted backups | Cycled out within 35 days of deletion from live systems. Backups are not restored to recover deleted accounts. |
We will email you to confirm once the deletion is complete.
8. What we have to keep, and why
A small amount of information survives deletion, because the law requires it or because we need it to protect you and us:
- Billing and tax records — invoices, amounts and dates, kept for 7 years under U.S. tax and accounting rules.
- A suppression record — a hashed version of your email, kept so we do not accidentally email you again or re-create the account.
- Security and fraud logs — kept up to 12 months.
- Records needed for a live legal matter — kept only while it lasts, then deleted.
- Aggregated, de-identified statistics — these no longer identify you and are not linked back to you.
9. What we cannot delete for you
We can only delete what is on our systems. We cannot:
- Remove posts already published. Once a post is live on Facebook, Instagram, X, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads or anywhere else, it belongs to that platform's records. Delete it in the platform, or in Social Butterfly before disconnecting.
- Delete your data held by a platform. Each platform holds its own copy of your account, posts and analytics under its own privacy policy. Ask that platform directly.
- Delete copies made by other people. Screenshots, shares, reposts and archives by third parties are outside our reach.
- Delete another workspace's data. If you were invited to someone else's workspace, we can delete your personal login and profile, but the workspace and its content belong to its owner.
10. Your other privacy rights
Deletion is one of several rights you have. You can also ask us what personal information we hold about you, get a copy of it, or correct it. Our Privacy Policy explains all of them, including specific rights for California residents, and the timelines we work to: confirmation within 10 business days and a full response within 45 calendar days.
